It all started on the banks of the Weber River in Ogden Utah near what is now 24th Street. A motley crew of pioneers, ranchers, and entrepreneurs pooled together an investment of $7,500 and created the Ogden Packing & Provision Co.
With its central location in the Western United States and easy access to the new transcontinental railroad, Ogden emerged as a perfect location to distribute products throughout the intermountain region and beyond. Between 1901 & 1917 their business grew rapidly and even served the needs of Allied Forces during WWI. The increased demand for fresh produce and meat over this time period called for innovative ways to meet this demand.
It was during this same time period that advances in electricity allowed the company to invest in state of the art refrigeration space. This refrigerated space meant that Ogden Packing & Provision Co could handle twice their original capacity and at one point employed the largest number of men and women of any single factory in the State of Utah.
Early on, much of Ogden Packing & Provision’s services revolved around the processing and packing of livestock products. But the Ogden valley was growing more and more of the nation’s poultry, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables which required its own specialized refrigeration and transport. To further handle the growth of this industry, the refrigerated space and product handling services were turned into a business of their own and Western Gateway Storage Co was officially born with James “Jim” Herbert DeVine becoming its president.
After Jim Herbert Divine’s passing, his son James Moloney DeVine took over the business and in July 1950 they built a brand new warehousing facility on 28th Street just west of Wall Avenue. “The warehouse will be the most modern in the intermountain country.” Said Mr. DeVine at the time of construction, “[The] refrigerated facility will feature every type of modern development known”.
In the late 1970’s, James M. DeVine passed the business on to his son James “Jim” Herbert DeVine, II after he returned from honorable duty in the United States Marine Corps.
In 2011, David & Becky Bornemeier took over the Western Gateway operation. In 2016, they celebrated the opening of another customer focused building on 125 W Doxey St. This state of the art building is a testament to proper design and planning to serve the needs of its customers.
Throughout the last century, our owners never lost sight of who they were serving and invested heavily in making the building state of the art. The decision to invest in the latest technology has served the business well.
We’re investing heavily on new and more efficient refrigeration and material handling equipment to keep our customers’ inventory SAFE, CLEAN and COLD. It’s smart for our business and it’s good for our environment.
For over a hundred years, Western Gateway Storage Co has been committed to providing solutions to its clients from all over the United States and being a valuable member of the local community. As we move forward, we will continue to push ourselves to be at the forefront of offering our customers the very best solutions and service.
The founders of Western Gateway Storage Company sought to make it easier for families across the United Sates to enjoy fresh meats and produce farmed throughout the Intermountain West. A task many take for granted today, these pioneers and entrepreneurs made it their mission to solve this problem. Although their beginning was humble, their efforts would serve as the foundation for now over a century of service to not only farmers and ranchers, but would eventually service the needs of a wide variety of manufacturers from food, to pharmaceutical, and even aerospace products. Over a century has passed and many things may have changed, but our mission to provide logistical solutions with exceptional service remains unchanged.
